One of the most highly valued maps of the African Continent will dominate the Life Member Breakfast auction at DSC's 2023 Convention. It was indeed the jewel in Peter CAPSTICK's collection of African maps and is one of only 525 hand-colored maps published in 1598 in Antwerp by the famed Plantin Press. It is impossible to know how many of these maps have survived the last 425 years. The remarkable condition of this map, which is framed in archival material, indicates that it once belonged for a lengthy period to a now-unknown person of high social standing. The map was created by Abraham Ortelius of Antwerp. He produced the first true, modern atlas in 1570, of which this map was a prime feature. It was at that time the most expensive book ever produced. This rare, well-preserved map is the French edition, produced in 1598. Ortelius was also the first cartographer to speak of 'continental drift' - the theory that the world's continents were once a single mass. Accompanying the map are twenty beautifully framed hand-colored original engravings of hunting scenes. The African Big Five feature as do other animals. These engravings were published in Bond Street, London between January and October 1813 (209 years ago) by the famed Edward Orme, the English painter, engraver and publisher of illustrated books. Samuel Howitt, a contemporary painter, illustrator and etcher of hunting scenes, was involved in some of these engravings. All of these items have been authenticated on the reverse side by Fiona Capstick. PROCEEDS BENEFIT DSC FOUNDATION (DSCF).
